Art in Wild Places

Art in Wild Places is a visual and poetic exploration of America’s wild landscapes—created during my artist residencies in some of the most breathtaking and ecologically significant national parks. Through a blend of dramatic photography, intimate macro imagery, and reflective storytelling, this project invites readers to slow down, look closely, and rediscover the beauty and fragility of the natural world.

From sunlit meadows alive with pollinators to rugged mountain vistas carved by time, each image reveals a moment where art, wilderness, and emotion meet. Alongside these stories, the book also shares practical guidance for those who dream of becoming an Artist-in-Residence themselves—offering insight into the application process, expectations, and how to build a meaningful creative project in partnership with a national park.

Art in Wild Places is both a celebration and a call to attention—an invitation to connect more deeply with the wild spaces that shape our sense of wonder, and a roadmap for artists inspired to create within them.

Drawing on his invitations to eight Artist-in-Residence programs, Jerry Fleury offers a practical, step-by-step guide in Art in Wild Places to help aspiring artists successfully apply for a National Park residency.
